Poor language skills can impede career success

by Thelma O’Connor

For foreign trained professionals and trades people to be successful in the Canadian labour market, basic English or French language skills are just not sufficient!

Most Canadian employers insist on a higher, more specific job-related level of language skills, and a demonstrated ability in both written and oral communication skills.

If you are relocating to Canada in the near future, it is critical to clearly establish whether the way you speak will be easily understood by native English-speaking Canadians. If not, this may be due to your strong accent, your understanding and use of idioms or your use of words that have a different meaning in a Canadian context.

Before you arrive in Canada, ask yourself the following questions:

What level of English fluency is required for the Canadian workplace in general?
What English language proficiency examination does my professional regulatory organization require?
What level of English is required for my occupation in Canada?
Where can I get my English language skills assessed?
Do I need to know more technical English for my occupation?
Do I need help with clearer pronunciation or accent reduction?
Do I need more English language training?

Language skills are a critical factor in determining a newcomer’s ability to find meaningful work, job stability and a salary commensurate with education and experience. By addressing these language issues, you will remove a key barrier to your successful integration into the Canadian labour market.
