Rules of Good Networking

by Thelma O’Connor
One of the most effective ways to find work in Canada is through networking. By networking you can learn about job openings, especially those that are not advertised or made public.

Newcomers to Canada are often unfamiliar with the concept of networking as a job search strategy. The following tips should help you to start building your network in Canada.

What is a network?
A network is a system of interconnected or cooperating persons that form a “net” of personal contacts that can provide support and information.

Who is in my network?
Your network consists of people who have direct or indirect linkages and/or interactions with you, your friends, family, acquaintances, counsellors, neighbours, personal banker, doctor, dentist etc. All of these people have the potential to connect you with many others who may be able to help you find the information you need.

Where do I begin to network?
Networking can take place anywhere and any time you speak with other people. You do not have to join expensive clubs or groups to network successfully.
